Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance mainly took place in Harlem, a neighborhood in New York City. During the early 20th century the predominantly black neighborhood saw a spark in black intellectual, literary and artistic life. It lasted from about the 1910's through the mid- 1930's. This period of time is considered a golden age in African American culture, manifesting in literature, music, stage performance and arts. Black- owned businesses such as, newspapers, theaters, publishing houses and music companies thrived. Many people passed through the "Negro Capital", some being the most important figures of that time. African American artists reclaimed their identity and pride during this time of racial prejudice and discrimination.
"We younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it doesn’t matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too."
